In 1969, Bernstein described “Symphonie Fantastique” as the first psychedelic symphony, composed over 100 years before the 1960s movement. He called it the first musical depiction of a trip, written in 1830 by Hector Berlioz. Berlioz, only 26, was in an obsessive relationship with actress Harriet Smithson, inspiring this composition. Hedi Slimane discovered it at age 11 and became passionate about it. Bernstein noted that anyone who’s experienced unrequited love would understand the symphony’s passionate melody. Berlioz defined it as an “immense instrumental composition of a new genre,” excelling in orchestration during the Romantic period.
